Waterfall
I’m grey today because, because
And I can’t find another way
My mind takes another step
Out through that grey door
Hold me still I’m shivering cos I’m not here
My face it grows a little paler every minute
As I leave the turmoil of my home, my heart
Listen to my friends oh so far away
Disappear but you’re here
Remember laughter with tears
I can feel you out there somewhere
But god it’s vague it’s so unreal
What you do I thought that you knew
As fresh as dew as dusk as you
You fade more as the minutes shift
Remain in fragments everywhere
I love you but you won’t give anything away
There’s nothing you need more than today
You can trust me I’ve got so much to say
Now I’m coming back, back into the day
Demo version
I’m grey today because, because
And I can’t find another way
My mind takes another step
Out through that grey door
Hold me still, I’m shivering cos I’m not here
My face, it grows a little paler every minute
To leave the turmoil of my home, my heart
I listen to my friends oh so far away
It’s so hard, don’t you know
What’s the cure and where are you?
Read the mind, feel the patterns
Read the signals, feel pulses through the grain
People always have two, I thought that you knew
As fresh as dew, as dusk as you
You fade more as the minutes shift
Remain in fragments everywhere
Disappear, but your hear
Remember laughter with tears
I can feel you somewhere
God it’s vague it’s so unreal
I love you but you won’t give anything away
There’s nothing you need more than today
You can trust me I’ve got so much to say
And I’m coming back, back into the day
Song Notes
“Waterfall” is one of Ash’s earliest recorded songs, and appears on the Shed and Pipe Smokin’ Brick demo tapes from 1993. The song featured regularly in the bands early set lists. Ash also recorded a version way back in 1995 in Belfast for Mike Edgar’s Across The Line show on BBC Radio Ulster. “Waterfall” is unique in the fact that it was re-recorded in 2001 and featured as B-side to the “Candy” single. The demo version includes an additional verse.
