Lose Control
I can’t stop, can’t stop thinking
About you at all
I called you up to come on round tonight
You wouldn’t give a straight answer
But you wouldn’t say no
Even though you’re going with him
Here comes the night
Lead me on
In your veins
Warm inside
Heart beats fast
Lights are low
I want you
Let it go
You arrive with cool in your eyes
And explain to me
How he makes you feel inside
So safe so secure
Later on as night is falling
You bring me on with violent words
Desire and being young
Here comes the night
Lead me on
In your veins
Warm inside
Heart beats fast
Lights are low
I want you
Let it go
Here comes the night, and it’s coming on
The lights are low and our records on
Inside your veins when you lead me on
Here comes the night, and its coming on
Song Notes
A song Tim Wheeler says “is about cheating on your girlfriend”. “Lose Control” is a massively complex wah filled song, that Mark Hamilton joked took Ash about 98 takes to get correct. Nevertheless “Lose Control” is regularly played live, usually as the set opener. The song features another nod to Star Wars, the track opens with the sound of a TIE fighter. The song “Lose Control” was featured in the game Gran Turismo, the first time one of the band’s songs was used in a video game. Ash would later credit this as saving the band financially, after nearly facing bankruptcy due to ongoing costs of their Teenage Wildlife tour documentary film.
Tim speaking to Noisy in 2015 about the Tie Fighter sample that opens the track:
I’m amazed we got away with that one. I think our label was owned by 20th Century Fox at the time, so I think that’s how we managed to get away with that. I’m not sure if we asked. We must have. It’s pretty cool.
Rick McMurray during the Tim Burgess Twitter listening party for 1977 in April 2020:
We knew we wanted the opener to be a proper punch in the face and this track was perfect; it took our reputation as a Nirvana on steroids and added a big dose of meth on top.
Recording was intense, there was so many edits to get the feel of this right but we got there. I think I drove Owen Morris mad with the tape splicing, but we nailed it. This set the tone for our live shows for the album tour and well beyond.
