You Can’t Have It All
Ash shot the video at Dukes Island Studios in London with long time friend and director Jeff Thomas who also produced the video for “Burn Baby Burn”, “Shining Light” and “Sometimes” amongst others. The video is a straight up performance piece with the band rocking out on a sound stage under a massive triangle of lights (that apparently took two days to hang!) and uses a lot of stop motion editing.
Disaster almost struck when bad weather in New York caused massive flight cancellations and a one point it looked like the video was going to be cancelled because Tim and Mark’s flight was cancelled, then 10 hours later their replacement flight was overbooked and they were put on an even later flight which was then also delayed! Their only saving grace was that they were given free upgrades to business class because of the nightmare.
Upon landing in Heathrow they were driven straight to the shoot and into wardrobe 2 hours late. Luckily Rick was there to shoot his solo stuff. Everything got caught up and the video looks great. Planes, Trains & Automobiles indeed!
On working with Jeff Thomas again, Mark commented in 2007:
It wasn’t a big budget on that video, but the director who shot it is Jeff Thomas, a huge friend of ours. He started off as a small video director, and now he’s a big-shot who does CSI, Without a Trace and all these big TV shows. He doesn’t actually have to do music videos any more but he does them because we’re friends. We helped him out in the beginning and now he’s still there for us.
On November 4th 2020, Ash uploaded a HD version of the video to YouTube.
