Different Today
He spent the week at his friends house
It had been ages since they’d been in touch
The weekend passed in a drunken haze
It felt good, like the old days
I lied you’re not so different today
Don’t go not so far away
And without you my life is boring anyway
They went down to the station on Sunday
He felt sad as the train pulled away
He wished that it would never end
He knew he’d never see him again
I lied you’re not so different today
Don’t go not so far away
And without you my life is boring anyway
I lied you’re not so different today
Don’t go not so far away
I lied your not so different today
Don’t go not so far away
Demo version
Blank your mind, don’t think my friend
Then it won’t seem like the end
It fell apart in my hands
It fell apart inside my head
I lied you’re not so different today
Don’t go, not so far away
And without dark, I’m innocent, betrayed
I’ll tell you the truth my precious love
If not first, you are above
I can’t explain, I can’t deny
I don’t understand the time, so why?
I lied you’re not so different today
Don’t go, not so far away
And without dark, I’m innocent, betrayed
I lied you’re not so different today
Don’t go, not so far away
I lied your not so different today
Don’t go, not so far away
Song Notes
“Different Today” was originally on the Shed demo tape from 1992.
This is a melodic and upbeat rock song that was later featured as a B-side on the “Uncle Pat” single and as a bonus track on the US release of Trailer. Of the earliest Ash songs, I think it is one of the most underrated. The ending to the demo version of the song is pretty different than the B-side. The lyrics on the demo version and the released B-side version are also almost completely different. (By Brian M).
