Ash were joined onstage by Popstars contestant Darius Danesh in Leeds last night for a rendition of their hit “Girl From Mars”.

Ash were at the Virgin Megastore in the city to perform a live show and sign copies of their new single “Shining Light”.

The Irish rockers performed a 30-minute set to fans in the store, which was initially stopped halfway through when a power surge caused a blackout. The band were forced to leave the stage, but returned ten minutes later, before introducing Darius for “Girl From Mars”.

Darius, who has reportedly attracted attention from major label Polydor after being dumped out of the popular TV talent contest, came onstage to what eyewitnesses have described as a “mixed reaction”. However, he told the crowd that Ash were “not pop stars but rock stars”, which appeased them somewhat.

An eyewitness said: “He seemed quite nervous and he didn’t sing the verse, but joined in for the chorus. The crowd were mixed in their reaction to him, but once they realised he wasn’t singing the whole song, most stopped booing.”

A spokesperson for Virgin Megastore added: “It wasn’t so much a rock n’ roll moment, but it was certainly a moment. It was surreal, but it was also good of Ash that they’re not taking things too seriously.”

Following their performance Ash autographed copies of new single “Shining Light”, while Darius also remained in the store, signing autographs himself.
