Summer
The video is largely a straight up performance-based concept where Hatherley plays to the camera and uses a mirror as a focal point during the transitions between guitar solos and vocals. This reflects Director Edgar Wright’s early experimentation with the kinetic and synchronized editing style he would become famous for in films like Baby Driver.
Director Edgar Wright on the video:
The “Summer” video contains an enormous amount of animation, flashcuts and subliminal frames (by the likes of Oscar Wright, among many others). It took an age to edit and failed the television standards epilepsy test 57 times before we got it passed.
Charlotte speaking to diymag.com:
You’ve just shot the video for your new single, “Summer”, how did that go?
It was really good. I had one day off, so went back home to London. It was quite low budget as well, so it’s basically me in a studio rocking out! There’s a bit of animation in there as well.
Was it weird to be shooting a video without the boys?
Yeah, it was actually. It felt weird having a big production team for just myself. I felt very lucky, and I think after a while you just get into the role.
