Tim Wheeler’s review of 1995

What happened on the day you left school?
Tim Wheeler: It was a real anti-climax. I did my maths A-level, and then went out for a meal with my friends, then the next day we went to play Glastonbury. I didn’t really feel anything. We went off on our tour an missed all the parties.
Best day of the year?
Oh God, I don’t know. It wasn’t at the start of the year… or in the summer. Hmm. We had a great time in America and in Australia, but I guess the best day was when we headlined the Astoria. Just before we played we listened to the charts and “Angel Interceptor” had gone in at number 14, and we enjoyed playing that gig. So that was a really good day. And I was wearing a fine shirt that night too.
Worst day of the year?
The day after we played with the Smashing Pumpkins in Dublin. We had to get up at five that morning, after only an hour’s sleep, and drive to get a ferry ’cos we were supposed to playing Cardiff that night. We missed the ferry, Rick was almost dead, at least the living dead. It was just really, really horrible - we’d been going for it quite a bit and felt so ill.
Menswear - are they all over?
I quite like Menswear actually, as people especially and as a band they’re… alright. We get on well. What have we got in common? We’re both junior pop stars.
What do you think of Britpop, and is there any future in Eire-pop?
Eire-pop? (laughs) I don’t think so. There’s not that many bands coming out of Ireland at the moment. Britpop is just a label. I guess technically we are Britpop ’cos we’re from Northern Ireland, but I don’t want to be part of it. In the Oasis/Blur thing, I was on Oasis’ side, because I wouldn’t ever listen to Blur.
Who’d be your ideal girl from Mars?
Oh, that’s a tough one. I don’t know… (goes real coy) I thought of one the other day, an actress, but I can’t remember who it was now. Erm, I’ll say Drew Barrymore in ET… because she was really cute. Not because I’m a paedophile.
