New Ash Interview

Wednesday, September 5th, 2007 | Permalink | Add a comment »

If you head over to the official Ash website you’ll notice that there is a new interview with frontman Tim Wheeler, in which he reveals what Ash have been up to since the album was released in July and what’s to come over the coming months.

Interesting is the revelation that the band have been recording B-Sides for an upcoming EP due around the time of the bands UK tour in October

We’ve been recording B-sides recently, working on a bunch of tracks, maybe to go with ‘Twilight Of The Innocents’ for an EP around our tour. And then the plan is to get in the studio early next year and start bringing out singles, as of about March.

Tim also comments on the B-Sides to the upcoming single ‘End Of The World’, and explains the history of the demo recordings on the 7-inches.

One’s called ‘Seventh Circle’, which fans might know as an old song called ‘Singapore Song’. Bootlegs of that have been floating around for years. I think it’s actually one of my best songs, but it’s just never quite fitted on any of the albums. Then there’s ‘Wasted On You’, which is a rocker from the album sessions. And the other one is ‘Statis In Darkness’ which I wrote a while ago with a string quartet. It’s another great song, actually. Pretty depressing, but beautiful at the same time.

And then on the 7-inches we’ve got the first version of ‘Palace of Excess’ back when it was called ‘Suicide Girls’ and also ‘Shattered Glass’. They were the first things we did in our studio. We ended up totally re-recording them, but these versions show the direction the album could’ve taken. We were trying to do it fully live, with one guitar, bass, drums and vocals. So they sound a lot rawer.

I Was Going To Judge The Star Wars X Factor…

Ash have posted another interview on their official website this time with bassist Mark Hamilton. In the interview Mark explains when they will start releasing songs straight through the internet.

‘I think next spring, once we’ve finished touring ‘Twilight Of The Innocents’, we’ll probably start releasing stuff straight away. We’ve already got some songs that never actually got recorded for this album. As soon as we have the time, we can just go into the studio and start recording them.’

Mark also confirms ‘End Of The World’ as the next single and explains that the long-awaited ‘Slashed’ horror film may get released.

‘We’ll probably start getting a plan together for ‘End Of The World’. We want to come up with some good creative ideas for that. And I’m going to finally edit the slash thing and put it up on YouTube. I think people should be quite interested to see a video of Chris Martin getting murdered!’

Official Press Release

Wednesday, June 13th, 2007 | Permalink | Add a comment »

This is a copy of the press release the band released to the press today regarding future Ash releases. The band will be discussing this in more detail soon, but were keen to avoid any confusion by explaining that this does not signal the end of physical releases. Bassist Mark Hamilton added: ‘Things are just gonna be different and we’re gonna have a lot of fun with formats and you the fans will get more content a lot quicker… it also does not state anywhere that we’re going independant’.

Irish rock band announce radical new music industry business model

London, June 12th 2007 - International rock band Ash, have announced bold new plans to cease releasing future albums in the traditional way.

On the eve of what will become their final album, ‘Twilight Of The Innocents’, the band have taken the decision to only release singles in the future.

Known for consistently writing hit singles since the early 90’s (17 top 40 hits, an Ivor Novello award and five Top 10 albums), the band feel it is time to make a stand in the future digital arena by only releasing singles. Periodically, the band will release compilation cd’s featuring the aforementioned singles.

Famously known for their pro-active stance on the internet (the band were the first to cultivate a huge loyal following using their online message board, were the first to use the internet via a fledgling nme.com, to get fans to vote for which tour towns they should play and had the first ever number one single in the download charts), the band feel it is now time to fully embrace the digital future of the music industry.

Owning their own recording studio means that the band will be able to write, record and release their music almost instantly, their fans will then benefit from not having to wait the usual ‘years’ between albums.

At a time when the music industry is in flux and with record sales at an all-time low, marketing music in the traditional sense is becoming increasingly less financially viable. The band hope that by harnessing the power of the internet and by being more creative in the way their singles are marketed, the record company can maximise sales, increase profits and enhance their already impressive 13 year career.

Tim Wheeler from the band:

‘The way people listen to music has changed, with the advent of the download the emphasis has reverted to single tracks. It hasn’t helped that most people have forgotten how to make a decent album. I’m constantly disappointed with records I buy. I believe our new album is the pinnacle of everything we’ve done thus far, and I’m proud that this will be remembered as our last album. The future lies elsewhere and we can have a lot of fun by changing things up. It’s like the Wild West at the moment, a time to take chances and try out new ideas.

When you’re tied to the album format, you find yourself waiting six months between finishing a record and releasing it. By leaving this behind we can enter a new phase of spontaneity and creativity. We have our own studio in New York, we can record a track and release it the next day if we feel like it, give it to people while it’s fresh. We’re the first band to do this , but I very much doubt we’ll be the last.

We’ve been one of the best singles bands of the last two decades and we’re still younger than a lot of bands on the current scene. I’m excited to push this claim further by dedicating ourselves wholly to the art of the single for the digital age.’

Ash Launch Myspace Site

Monday, May 8th, 2006 | Permalink | Add a comment »

Ash have seized control of the official Ash myspace website from their US record label. The band will now update the site and run it as a blog with updates and clips direct from the studio. Here’s what the band had to say:

Hi all,
Just a quick hello and message to let you know we have taken this site into our own hands and have started to get the ball rolling with it.

The US label gave us the passwords as they hadn’t been maintaining it and now we’ve got no-one to blame but ourselves. We’ve inquired about getting the plain ‘ash’ domain. Let’s see how that works out. An ex-black metal band currently have it.

There’s a few video’s uploaded for now but once we get the rest from the label we’ll try to get them all archived here as well as new pics etc from the studio. We start recording for real next month and have 30 demos we’re currently finishing. Incase you didn’t know we are now based in New York and later in the year we’ll be trying out all the new stuff in low key shows in random bars/parties. We’ll keep you posted! Oh yeah! Put us in your Top 8, tag the vids / songs, suscribe to the blog and help us make it great!

If you’re bothered, please add us, suscribe to the blog, put us in your Top 8 and help us get the numbers up. We’re starting this now, so that hopefully by next year when the album is ready to go it’ll be rocking and a great portal to keep everyone informed and bring more people here too.

Any advice on improvements, pimp ups etc. would be appreciated. As I’ve no experience in writing code it’s all new to me!

Sorry this is taking so long to put together, but the front end of the site is having to be completely re-built and our new designers are totally snowed under at the moment.

The message board will remain, so you can still slag each other off on here if you feel like it.

Tav.
